Poker Action and Actions

Definition 1: Poker Actions

An action, in poker, is where as a player has to make a decision, such Check. With online poker a player is presented with various action buttons, alphabetically ordered these are:

Bet
This simply means putting money into the pot. The following players will then have to match this increase in the pot

Check
To put into the pot an equal amount to that of the last bet made.

Fold
When a player does not wish to continue with their hand they fold there cards.

Raise
To put a greater amount of money into the pot than the previous bet.

Re-Raise
This is when the next player to the player that has raised puts in even more money than the previous raise.

Poker Pre-Actions

Many online poker sites also give you pre-action buttons. These allow you to make a decision and sit back, when its your turn to act the action is automatically carried out for you. Pre-action buttons are useful for players who are playing at multiple tables.

Poker Actions at an online poker table

In the above example of a "fixed-limit 5/10 Texas Hold'em play money game" from Party Poker. Area 1 shows five pre-action buttons:

Fold
By ticking the box here you will automatically fold when it's your turn.

Call(5)
As player "speed270" has bet 5 you have to at least match this bet by putting in 5. By ticking this box, as long as nobody raises, you will automatically match the bet with 5.

Call(10)
The same as above, if nobody raises, you will call the bet with 5. However if a player raises to 10 you will call the raise up to 10. Basically put you are saying that you are willing to put in 10 to match any raise.

Call Any
Here you are saying you will match any raise made and call it. Be very careful with this option in No-Limit games as a player may go all-in and you'll have to match it!

Raise (10)
This means that if no other player raises, you wish to raise to 10.

Raise Any
This means you will raise on whatever raises are made before you. This can be used when you have some great cards.

Some other pre-actions that are not shown here, because of the bet by player "speed270" are:

Check
This means you will check if nobody bets. If someone does you will then have to decide which action to take when it's your turn.

Check/Fold
This pre-action button allows you to check when no one bets but fold your hand to any bets made.

Definition 2: Action

Action is a word used within the poker community for loose tables or games. For example "You've gotta check out table 23089 its full of action".

The poker player here is telling a friend that he's found a table where a lot of players are betting and going through to the end i.e. the river. These tables are loose and are generally full of bad players. By playing a Selective/Aggressive style, you should make you some good money at these tables.
