Learn About Poker BankrollYou will need to have money to play with, once you've practiced with the play-money games, and feel ready to play for real. The first basic rule of gambling is that you should NEVER bet more money than you can afford to loose. As a general rule of thumb you will need to have 300 times the size of the big blind available to you. So for example if your playing $0.10/$0.25 you will need a bankroll of $75. Now you don't need to deposit that amount into the poker room but you should have it available to transfer to you poker account. Why do you need 300 times the big blind? This is so you can compensate for any fluctuations or swings that will occur purely down to chance. We will talk about this in depth in a later lesson on money management. However, to illustrate the fact imagine your playing rolling a die (singular of dice) with a friend and if 1,2,3 or 4 is rolled you win the bet and if 5 or 6 is rolled your friend wins. As you can see the odds are in your favor to make a lot of money if you play a lot of roles. But here's the catch, each roll of the die costs $1 to bet and you only have $2. The odds are still in your favor but its not unlikely that the die rolls a 5 or a 6 the first time so you loose a dollar. Then imagine this happens again. You are then out of pocket! Now, if you play the same game but you have $20 you would need to be very, very unlucky not to end up taking your friends money. So for the moment just be aware you need about 300 times the amount of the big blind for the time being. So if you've only got $50 to deposit then stick to $0.02/$0.05 until you've built up your bankroll and can go up a level. However we will look at ways for you to build up experience and your bankroll with very little money.
