So far you may be thinking that you'd love to play but have some doubts and fears about playing online poker. So let's have a look at some common online poker fears for new players.

  • Fears about playing online poker

Online poker is very big business. Online poker sites make their money from the rake which is a small percentage taken from the pot. So let’s say you win a pot of one hundred dollars, the site may take between $0.5 and $1 as a rake. This is how they make their money for hosting the game.

Poker sites make their money by having players betting on their tables but NOT by betting with players. Their only interest is having a lot of players using their site.

They therefore take security VERY seriously. They go to great lengths to maintain their image of being a safe place to play poker. On this site we only list and recommend trusted sites.

Here are some common fear new players have:

The Deal: Online poker sites use algorithms to shuffle cards. Algorithms are a small set of program instructions and are far better than machines or humans who shuffle in real life games. So your chances of being dealt great or poor hole cards are the same as everyone else's.

Depositing Funds: Many people are worried about giving credit card or banking details online. There are sites that fraud people, but well established poker sites have very high level of protection which is equal or if not higher than many famous online retailers and banks.

Poker Robots (bots): Many online poker players worry about bots. A bot is a computer program controlled by a site or another player. These programs are supposed to play a perfect game of poker. Thankfully this means they play purely on percentages. We will learn more about percentages later on. Bots play numbers but have no emotion or judgement. Although with human players emotion can be a disadvantage if not kept in check our judgement gives us the upper hand.

Some sites may use bots in play-money and training games but they don’t in real money games.

As far as other players using bots, I wouldn’t worry too much. Online poker sites ban players using bots and its not dificult to detect who is using them. Besides you will soon have learnt enough to play better than bots and more importantly the majority of online players.
