Poker Hands and RankingsThere are 52 cards in a Deck of Cards and there are Four Suits.

In Poker each suit carries equal value. So for example a Ten of Hearts is equal to a Ten of Spades. The Ace can be a high card (above a King) or a low card (below a Two) depending on what is better for the player.
A poker hand consists of five cards. The ranking of hands is in order of value. The value is dictated by the probability of a hand being directly dealt from a well shuffled deck of cards. There are nine ranked hands in poker. Let’s
now have a look at these in descending order:

Description: Five cards of the same suit without sequence. Between flushes the one containing the highest card wins. Probability: 1 in 509 or 0.197% (being dealt this hand straight from the deck).

Description: Five cards in sequence but not of the same suit. Between straights, the one with the highest card at the top of the sequence wins. K,Q,J,10,9 beats 5,4,3,2,A as the ace counts as low (i.e. 1). Probability: 1 in 255 or 0.393% (being dealt this hand straight from the deck).

Description: Three cards
of the same rank and two unmatching cards.

Description: Two cards of one rank, two of another and an odd card. Between 2 two pairs the one with the highest ranking pair wins. If they are the same then the highest ranking second pair wins. If both hands have the same pairs then the one with the highest odd card wins. Probability: 1 in 21 or 4.75% (being dealt this hand straight from the deck).

Description: Two cards of one rank, with three odd cards. Between pairs the hand with the highest pair wins. If the pairs are equal then the highest odd card decides, if still equal the next highest odd card wins and so on Probability: 1 in 2.37 or 42% (being dealt this hand straight from the deck).

Description: This hand has no name, although it is sometimes referred to as "high-card" or "no-pair". Hands are graded by the highest rank card. If two players have the same high-card then the next highest counts, if still equal the next and so on. Probability: 1 in 2 or 50% (being dealt this hand straight from the deck).
These are the nine ranking poker hands. These ranking never change no matter what version of poker you are playing. Now let's move on to the next lesson.
