The Layout of a Poker Table. It's usful to familiarize yourself with the look and feel of the online poker table and the below picture shows the typical layout of a poker game table. Once again we have taken the screen shot from Party Poker to keep in line with previous screen shots.
Once the game has started and it’s your turn, you will be presented with various options in the form of action buttons. BET, CALL, RAISE, RE-RAISE, CHECK, FOLD.
Not all buttons will be available to you. For example if a previous player has made a bet you will be able to RAISE, CALL or FOLD. Also the CALL button may have a number next to it. CALL (10) this indicates that 10
chips are required to match the last bet.
These are very important and you must become familiar with them. These buttons are designed to speed up the game and allow you to select your action in advance of when it is your turn to play. Pre-Action buttons give the same options as Action buttons, but they can sometimes give the player two options on a single button. For example: CHECK/FOLD This button allows a player to check if nobody bets, but fold if they do. Important: If you use pre-action button at the wrong time you can give clues as to the strength of your hand. This is a good example of an online tell. Although you will study online tells in a later lesson let’s look at this example:
Tick-boxes allow you to make decisions in advance about certain aspects of the game. For example auto-post which allows you to have your small and big blind posted automatically for you when it’s your turn to make them. If you don’t have this box ticked you will be prompted every time it’s your turn. Another tick box is sit-out. This can be used when you wish to be away from the game for a short while (i.e. making a coffee), but you don’t want to leave the game. You will be left out of the deals until you indicate otherwise. Just one important note is that if there are people queuing to play at the table you may be timed out if you are away too long. The most important tick-box is the Muck losing hands. Ticking this box automatically folds a hand at a showdown without the other players seeing it. It is a good idea to have this box ticked, because it is poor strategy to let other players see your cards and build up knowledge of your playing style. There may be times that you want
to show your cards (advertise) to try and give a false image of your playing
style. Even in this case it’s wise only to un-tick the box and then
re-tick it after, as not to show your future hands by accident. However
as a new or inexperienced player it’s probably best to have the
muck losing cards ticked always until you have mastered the basics.
