Play Money.

Play-money games are a great place for newcomers. They are an excellent place to learn how the game works and at what pace the game is played at. They are also a great place to learn about the options you have as a player and how they are represented on-screen.

However, as a newcomer who wants to make money you should not form bad habits, which will work against you in the future. Remember players at a play-money table generally do not play how they would at a real-money table. Players will often bet stupidly high amounts with poor cards. So you may well start to think that winning in these games you already a hot shot. Real money games are very different and the level of play is higher.

First of all you need to choose a table from the lobby of the poker site of your choice. Here's a screen shot of Party Poker's lobby, which is simlar to any other online poker lobby:

  1. This tells you that you are in the "Play Money Section"

  2. Play Money tab which also tells you that you're in the pretend money section.

  3. Click once and you highlight a table in this case the table is "Play money", table number: 4069943, the small blind is 5 and the big blind is 10 hence 5/10, and there are 10 players seated at this 10 seat table.

  4. This shows the names of the players at the table and their stack (quantity of chips they have at the table). If you are observant, you will see that in point 3 the highlighted table shows the table is full (10/10) but here it shows an empty seat! This is just that the software takes a few seconds to filter through the information and the empty seat will soon show the name of a player.

If you double click on a table of your choice a new window will pop-up with that table. Even if the table is full you can open it and watch the game. If the table is not full you will have the option to sit at any of the empty seats.
