The Blinds and Hole Cards

  • The Blinds

Before any cards are dealt, the two players seated next to the player with the Button (Dealer’s Disc) put in the small and big blind respectively.

The small blind is typically half the amount of the big blind e.g.. 2$/4$. This is not always the case though and some games can have 10$/25$.

If nobody raises in the first round of betting the the small blind will have to put in further money to match the big blind if they want to continue.

Very simply everybody who wishes to continue has to have put in the same amount of money as the rest.

  • The Hole Cards (pocket cards)

After the blind bets have been put into the pot the hole-cards are dealt. Each player then looks at their hole-cards. With online poker your hole-cards are always and only visible to you.

The first player to act now is sat to the immediate left of the player who put in (posted) the big blind. This player has three options, call, raise or fold.

After the first player, all the other players take it in turn to act, in a clockwise direction.

In the case that nobody raises the last but one player to act will be the small blind, who will have to increase there stake to that of the big blind if they wish to continue. They can therefore check, raise or fold.

The last player to act is the Big Blind who can check and the games goes onto the flop or raise and the other players will have to match this increase, fold or re-raise.

Once all player who wish to stay in the hand have placed in an equal amount into the pot, the betting interval ends.

HOT TIP:
In online poker if you are the Big Blind and nobody has raised you will see the following options Check, Raise and Fold. Even if you have very poor cards don't fold! It costs you nothing to continue to see the flop and you never know you may be lucky.
